Understanding Housing Environment  PSYCHOLOGY DIMENSION AS RESIDENTIAL SATISFACTION DETERMINANT

ABSTRACT

 

The house dwellers very often show the tendency of dissatisfaction to their housing physical arrangement. This can be seen from the community behavior who do not want to dwell ready built house, change their housing physical arrangement, move to other houses, or experience carefully ,it can be seen, that housing utilization tend to deviate, often because of inconformity between housing physical arrangement and social psychological need of the dwellers. This means there is a difference between the mental picture of dwellers about an ideal house with the fact experienced within the house.

Intrinsically a house is not simply a shelter nor a building where dwellers conduct daily activities, but it is a home. A house has to be able to act as an intact of life supporting system for the family living in it. Thus an it is needed to fulfill two essential requirements of a family when dwelling its house, that is; physical sustenance through housing physical environmental availability, and also social-emotional sustenance through man-humanness social emotional environmental availability.

As an architectural environment, a house has to function in three ways : a) to maintain psychological condition that is needed for the behavioral sustenance of the dweller; b) able to provide a behavior setting, and c) able to support psychological condition of the dweller through symbol exploiting.

The three housing environmental functions above; always contain components of perceptual, cognitive and the action that represent psychological process elements of relation between human being (behavior and the experience) and his physical environment. This psychological process experienced by the dweller at the moment he runs his life within his house. For those reason the environmental psychology approach (study the relationship between behavior and environmental context) can be exploited to give guidance in understanding housing environmental psychology dimension and also its role as input in completing housing provision with more man-humanness design.

Understanding environmental psychology dimension of housing means understanding the existence of psychological relationship between dwellers behavior and his experience with his housing physical setting, that has a high influence in the level of residential satisfaction. Some housing environmental psychology dimension that really determine residential satisfaction, are process of forming architectural space in a house, process to change the neutral space become acute space and chronic space within a house, the utilization of house function as a territory, and also the forming of house as a behavior setting.
