Bugis traditional house can be considered as an expression of ancient culture of Bugis people. It has been continuously inherited from generation to generation. On the functional basis, Bugis traditional house has a social function, not only as dwelling place, but also family building, and a place for the host to adapt and actualize them with the environment. Bugis traditional house is able to cater for all industrial activities of woven silk, without disturbing the main function of the house, i.e. the dwelling place. This indicates that the house can be considered as a productive house.

The ability of Bugis traditional house to act as productive house can show the development of meaning and function of the house. The development of the house can be no longer seen as only a dwelling place, but also other functions, such as economic and social functions. This development proves that Bugis traditional house is not static, but dynamically developing. Within its development, Bugis traditional house, which develops HBE (Home Based Enterprise) undergoes some changes, but the changes do not alter the house form and space arrangement of the house. HBE has played an important role, as the filter to protect the house from influences that can loose the identity of Bugis traditional house.

Although there is a conflict of interest between the desire of altering the house form and the need of keeping the existence of woven silk HBE, the traditional home industry of woven silk dominantly influences the owner to keep the house form as it traditionally is. The reason of this is that the life style of the occupants (users) still depends on the development of woven silk HBE, while the need of developing the industry depends much on the form and space arrangement of the

house. So as the result, the form and space arrangement of Bugis traditional house tend to be kept original. Different situation happens on Bugis traditional house, which does not function as the place of woven silk industry. The house identity could easily be changed, because of no filter against external influences. Influences could easily be absorbed by the occupants to change the standard form and space arrangements that suitable to their desire.

Based on the above situation, it can be concluded that the traditional identity of Bugis house could exist stronger in the house, which runs woven silk home industry than that does not one. The presence of home industry (woven silk enterprise) can even enrich the meaning and function of the house. The industry can function as the filter to protect the traditional identity of the house from influences of the changing life of the owner. The industry can strengthen the existence of Bugis traditional house.
